Pigout Barbeque

Overview

If you’re driving through Hazlehurst and catch the unmistakable scent of slow-smoked meat drifting through the air, chances are you’re close to Pigout Barbeque at 28 N Williams St, Hazlehurst, GA 31539, United States. I’ve eaten at a lot of Southern barbecue joints over the years-from roadside pits in Alabama to award-winning smokehouses in Texas-and this local favorite holds its own in a way that feels both authentic and personal.

The first time I stopped by, it was just after noon. The parking lot was already filling up with a mix of work trucks, families, and a few out-of-town visitors who had clearly done their homework. Inside, the atmosphere was casual and welcoming. No frills, no gimmicks-just the kind of diner-style setup where the focus is squarely on the food and the people serving it.

The menu leans into classic Southern barbecue staples: pulled pork sandwiches, sliced brisket, smoked chicken, ribs, and hearty sides like baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, and mac and cheese. I ordered the pulled pork plate with two sides, a choice I often use as a benchmark. According to the National Barbecue & Grilling Association, slow-smoking meat at low temperatures-typically between 225°F and 250°F-allows collagen to break down gradually, creating tender, flavorful results. You can taste that method here. The pork was moist without being greasy, with a deep smoky flavor that suggested hours in the smoker rather than a shortcut in the oven.

Their barbecue sauce deserves a mention too. It strikes a balanced profile-slightly sweet, mildly tangy, and not overpowering. In my experience, the best barbecue sauce complements the meat rather than masking it, and that’s exactly what’s happening here. I watched as a staff member carefully sliced brisket to order, explaining to a customer how the bark forms during the smoking process. That kind of transparency builds trust. You know you’re not getting reheated leftovers; you’re getting something prepared with care.

Reviews from locals consistently highlight the generous portions and friendly service. On one visit, I spoke with a couple who drive in weekly from a neighboring county just for the ribs. They described them as fall-apart tender, and after trying a half rack myself, I understood why. The meat pulled cleanly from the bone but still had that slight bite barbecue enthusiasts look for-what pitmasters call the perfect tug.

From a food safety and preparation standpoint, proper smoking also means maintaining internal meat temperatures recommended by the USDA. While diners rarely see what happens behind the scenes, well-run establishments follow these standards to ensure both flavor and safety. Nothing about my visits suggested otherwise; everything tasted fresh and properly handled.

Sides matter just as much in a Southern smokehouse, and here they’re not an afterthought. The baked beans had bits of smoked meat mixed in, adding depth and texture. The coleslaw provided a crisp, cool contrast to the rich meats, which is exactly how it should function on a barbecue plate. This balance shows a clear understanding of traditional barbecue pairings, something culinary historians often note as central to Southern food culture.

Location-wise, being right on N Williams Street makes it easy to find whether you’re a Hazlehurst local or just passing through town. The accessibility adds to its appeal, especially for travelers looking for an authentic meal rather than a chain restaurant experience.

Of course, no place is perfect. During peak lunch hours, you might wait a bit longer for your order. But honestly, when you’re dealing with smoked meats prepared in batches rather than rushed to meet demand, that wait is part of the process. Good barbecue takes time. There’s no shortcut around that, and in this case, the patience pays off.

Between the consistent quality, straightforward menu, and welcoming vibe, this spot stands out as more than just another diner. It’s a place where technique meets tradition, and where each plate reflects a clear respect for Southern barbecue heritage.

We have been driving quite a while and I’ve gotten hungry and we’re in the mood for some barbecue. We found this on our Google search and decided to give it a try. The special today was turkey, giblet, gravy, and collard greens and cornbread. That’s one of the things we ordered. We also ordered the brisket plate which came with green beans and coleslaw. The gals at the front were very accommodating and very warm and friendly. The food was good and we got our Phil and the sweet tea was absolutely wonderful. Full bellies and on our way. That was a very nice stop. #stevensleavin

The BBQ straight up master piece. Try with and without the sauce. They are very friendly and great price to boot. The amount that you get for the price is fair. I guarantee you wont leave there being dissatisfied. Cole slaw, and fries were fresh and spot on.
